What is Mix and Mastering?
In short:
Mixing is the process of combining all tracks into a single song, where mastering makes the song ready for release.
A bit more detailed:
Mix:
Mixing ensures that the song holds together as a whole.
The intro, verse, chorus, and outro feel like parts of the same universe.
- Balancing the volume between tracks:
Ensure that each instrument/vocal is at an appropriate level.
For example, the vocals should not be drowned out by the drums, and the bass should be clear without overpowering everything else. - Panning instruments in the stereo field:
Place the sound in the left, right, or center of the stereo field.
For example, the vocals in the center, hi-hat slightly to the right, and guitar slightly to the left.
This creates space and a sense of “depth.” - Add effects:
Add EQ, compression, reverb, delay, and more.
Master:
Mastering is the process where a finished mix is polished and prepared for release on all media
- Balance in the sound:
Ensures that the entire track sounds cohesive and clear on all systems, for example, PA systems, Bluetooth speakers, phone speakers, AirPods, headphones, and home stereo systems, etc. - Adjusting the dynamics:
Adjust the balance between quiet and loud sections so the track has energy without distortion. - Refine the frequency range:
In simple terms, it involves working with the bass, midrange, and treble so that nothing dominates or gets lost in the track. - Adding “shine”:
Small adjustments with effects like EQ, compression, limiting, and stereo width to ensure the track has a professional sound. - Preparing for release:
The final version, the “Master File,” is created at StreetBeat, where we deliver standard files for both Streaming and CD.
(Note) Vinyl (LP) often requires a separate master as it functions slightly differently (see explanation further down the page).
What is the difference between mastering for Streaming, CD, and Vinyl (LP)?
Each medium requires a master that is tailored to its unique requirements and limitations, so the music sounds its best.
Streaming
Typically a high-resolution digital master (e.g., 24-bit / 44.1–96 kHz).
Services also normalize the volume (LUFS standards), so excessively high loudness can result in a flat sound.
CD
The standard is 16-bit / 44.1 kHz PCM.
That means it requires dithering so that the audio quality isn’t worsened.
Dithering is the process of adding low-level noise when reducing bit depth, for example from 24-bit to 16-bit, to minimize quantization distortion.
Vinyl (LP)
Vinyl has some physical limitations; for example, too much bass can make the needle skip on the record.
Therefore, a special vinyl master is often made with more dynamics and reduced highs and lows.
The length of the track also matters here; long sides require lower volume.
