Rán (Old Norse for “Robbery” and “Theft”) is the goddess of the sea and wife of Ægir. She represents the deadly and unpredictable side of the ocean by actively stealing (robbing) drowned sailors.
Using her great net, she captures them and drags them down to her cold realm at the bottom of the sea, which led the skalds to use the expression “to go to Rán” as a euphemism for dying by drowning.
